John ANDREWS MBE DL  (2010)



John is a founder of Andrews Group plc, now Andrews Sykes Group plc.  From 1990 he was Chairman of Decantae Mineral Water Ltd.  He is a past chairman of Advantage Business Angels and Investor Champions plc.  John is Chairman of Black Country Community Foundation and a trustee of Birmingham Community Foundation.


John was High Sheriff of West Midlands 2004/05.

Roger BURMAN CBE DL

Roger was a Director at Burman & Sons Ltd for 11 years and then Chairman and Managing Director with Teledictor Ltd for 33 years. In 1984 Roger was appointed as the Director of National Exhibition Centre Ltd and 5 years later he was appointed as the Chairman. He is currently the Chairman of Symphony Hall (Birmingham) Ltd and is also a Guardian & Warden of the Birmingham Assay Office.


Roger has been the President of the Birmingham Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Chairman of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce. He is currently the Chairman of the British Hall Marking Council, a General Tax Commissioner, Member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee, Member of the British Overseas Board and he is Pro-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. Roger is a Former Trustee and Bailiff of Lench’s Trust and the Chairman of the Sir Barry Jackson Trust.


Roger was High Sheriff of West Midlands in 1999/2000.

George CARTER CBE DL OstJ (1996)

George was in public practice as a Chartered Accountant until 1994 and was senior partner in Price Waterhouse. He served on a number of Government advisory boards and committees.  George is a former President of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the West Midlands Development Agency, and a Member of the WM Regional Council of the CBI.


George was High Sheriff of West Midlands,  1998–1999


Sir Frederick CRAWFORD DL  (1995)

Sir Frederick is a former professor of Stanford University in California and a former Vice-Chancellor of Aston University.  He was also the Chairman of the Criminal Cases Review Commission.  He was a founder member of the Birmingham Lunar Society.


Sir Frederick was High Sheriff of West Midlands in 1995/96.  


Professor Sir Brian FOLLETT DL (2000)




Sir Brian was appointed as a Lecturer with the Department Of Zoology at the University Of Leeds in 1965, he then moved to the University of Bangor where he became a Professor. He later became a Professor of Zoology and Head of the School of Biological Services at the University of Bristol. In 1993 he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Warwick and remained there until 2001.


Sir Brian has been an Honorary Secretary with The Royal Society. He has been a Member of numerous UK Government Research Councils. He has been a Trustee of the British Museum (Natural History), President of the Association of Science Education, a Board Member of Coventry and Warwickshire Partnerships and Chair of the Single Regeneration Budget.


Sir Brian was knighted for Services To Science in 1992.



Colonel Antony GEORGE MBE DL (2000)


Tony qualified as a solicitor.  After a period of working as a solicitor in the City of London, he moved to the Midlands in 1969 when he joined the legal department of Guest Keen & Nettlefolds Limited.   He retired in 1996 as Company Secretary of what was by then, GKN plc.     


Tony was in the Territorial Army for 35 years, from 2nd Lieutenant to full Colonel, retiring as TA Advisor to Engineer in Chief.  He is a member of West Midlands RFCA.


Tony is a trustee of the Black Country Living Museum and Chairman of the Museum’s Development Trust.    He is also chair of the ROH Orthopaedic Charity, based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He chairs the Birmingham Committee of ABF, the Soldiers’ Charity.  


Colonel Antony GRIFFITHS CBE TD JP DL (1982)


Tony was formerly a managing director of several motor companies, most recently Soans of Leamington Spa.  He was also a county director of St John Ambulance and a director of Elisabeth the Chef.  


He was a member of the Territorial Army for 30 years, commander of 2 Mercian, a TA Colonel of Western District and Honorary Colonel of 2 Mercian and 3 Staffords.    Tony was ADC to Her Majesty the Queen for 4 years.  He was also a Birmingham City Magistrate.

Captain Margaret GUY RD DL RNR (1982)

Margaret was an officer in the WRNS.  She joined the WRNR and following several promotions she was appointed commanding officer of HMS Forward.  


Margaret was a headmistress at Kings Heath High School, then of Rathvilly School and also of Edgbaston College Preparatory School.


Byron HEAD DL


(September 2009)







Byron worked in the steel industry for 20 years, rising to a senior management position. In 1976 he attended the Henley Business School and moved to Smethwick in 1978 to take up the position of General Manager of a tiny engineering company. Byron subsequently completed one of the early management buy-outs. He took control of a company with sales of £1m. and turned it into a profitable, multi-site company.


Byron was appointed High Sheriff of the County of West Midlands for the period 2008/2009

Byron has carried out much charitable work in the West Midlands.



William HUSSELBY OBE DL

William has been the Chairman of Cogent Elliott Group, Chairman of Centenary Appeal NSPCC Birmingham, Chairman of the Lady Leveson Charity Foundation, Chairman of Governors, Lady Leveson Primary School, President of the NSPCC Birmingham and on the Regional Council of CBI.


He has been a Tax Commissioner in Coventry, Trustee of the Coventry Cathedral Development Trust and a Director of the Welsh National Opera.


William was High Sheriff of West Midlands in 1986/1987.

Joe JORDAN DL (2009)


Joe is a Consultant Gynaecologist who worked at Birmingham Women’s Hospital from 1966 until his retirement from the NHS in 2002.   He is still active professionally in the field of gynaecology.  His special interest is in the prevention cancer of the cervix, and has been leading a European group the aim of which is to prevent cervical cancer, particularly in Eastern Europe where it is still extremely common.    


Joe is a Deputy Chair of the Birmingham Civic Society.

Ursula is a former Headteacher and  a  former Head of Education at The Industrial Society.  She was Director of Educational Services for the RSA Examinations Board


Ursula has been Chair of numerous organisations, including Quality Careers Service, Coventry and Warwickshire Education Business Partnership, Careers Services National Association, Coventry and Warwickshire Learning and Skills Council, West Midlands Learning and Skills Council, Coventry & Warwickshire Travel to Learn Forum, Coventry & Warwickshire Construction Education and Training Foundation.


She has been Vice-Chair of the Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Partnerships, Coventry & Warwickshire Connexions Service and a Governor of Coventry University

Ursula has also been Director at UK Skills


John SAVILLE DL (1997)

John was the founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Saville Gordon Estates. He was High Sheriff in 1996 -97.  He was Director of the Birmingham Gang Show.  He also served 25 years as a JP.  He was President of Birmingham Scouts and has been involved in scouting for 40 years. He is also a champion of the Stonehouse Gang in Birmingham.

John was the Chief Executive and Town Clerk of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council from 1977 – 1995.  Since 1995 he has been the Commissioner for The Social Fund of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  He is a qualified solicitor and was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel.


Colonel  Iain SWINNERTON TD DP DL (1976)

Iain was the Managing Director of Swinnerton and Co. (Stourbridge) Ltd.

Col Swinnerton has spent 34 years in the regular and territorial armies and is an authority on the history and records of the British Army.  He was also president of the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry and also Chairman, then President of the British Federation of Family History Societies.


Bruce TANNER DL (1995)


Bruce was a former Managing Director of Horizon Midlands Ltd, then Chairman and Chief Executive of Horizon Travel Ltd, and later of Horizon Travel plc.  He was also a non-executive director of Birmingham Cable Corporation.  


Bruce was a magistrate in Birmingham for many years.  He was also High Sheriff of West Midlands in 1991-1992.

Dr Jagjit Singh TAUNQUE MBE DL (2001)


Jagjit is a retired Birmingham City Community Liaison and Media Officer in Environmental Health Services.  He was the first Asian to win a seat on the West Midlands County Council and he was elected Vice-Chairman in 1985.  He was one of the founder members of the WMCC Airport Committee.  Jagjit represented Great Britain in the International Nuclear Free one Authorities Conference in Cordoba where he spoke on Nuclear Disarmament.


In 2002 Jagjit was awarded an honorary degree of Doctorate by the University of Birmingham and was awarded Ambassador for Peace by the Interreligious International Federation for World Peace.


Jagjit holds a number of honorary patron and trustee positions in the community.


Kuldip Singh WOUHRA MBE DL (Tony)

Tony came to Britain in 1961 and started a small business in 1965. East End Food now employs over 350 people with an annual turn-over of £ 185m exporting to over 22 countries.


Tony’s father said,”do not sell any food that you would not eat yourself” and this taught him purity in food. With the help of a foundation Tony jointly trained 250,000 indian farmers to grow food without using chemicals because the pesticide residue became a priority for the company.  


Tony took over the site of HP Sauce in Birmingham and he plans to open an urban farm to demonstrate that green vegetables can be grown hydroponically. This will help to tackle obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.  


Tony’s father-in-law went blind at the age of 53 and that inspired Tony to open a talking newspaper for the blind. This soon resulted in 350 recipients who appreciated being able to listen to local news.  


Ann WORLEY DL (2000)

Ann was a solicitor.  She was a local conciliation officer viewer for the Solicitors Complaints Bureau,.  She was an associate member of the Birmingham FHSA as a panel member and deputy chairman of the medical service committee, hearing complaints agains doctors.  She is also a non-executive director of Birmingham Women’s Health Care NHS Trust.
